چکیده

In the present investigation the acetone extracts of three marine macroalgae Laurentia obtusa, Codium elongatum and Cutleria multifida were tested for antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic potential. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by free radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging and reducing power. C. elongatum extract had most potent free radical scavenging activity (IC50=382.45 μg/ml). Moreover, the tested extracts had effective reducing power and superoxide anion radical scavenging. Total content of phenol and flavonoid in extracts were examined using FolinCiocalteu reagent and by aluminium chloride method, respectively. Further, the antimicrobial potential was determined by a microdilution method. Among the tested species, extract of L. obtusa showed the best antimicrobial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration values ranging from 0.156 to 5 mg ml. Finally, the cytotoxic activity was tested using MTT method. Extract of L. obtusa expressed stronger cytotoxic activity toward tested cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 38.63 to 67.62μg/ml. Key-Words: Acetone extracts; Anticancer activity; Antimicrobial activity; Antioxidant activity; Algae.

Fungal Endosymbionts of Macroalgae: Need for Enquiries into Diversity and Technological Potential

Recent studies reveal that ascomycete fungi establish an endosymbiotic association with marine algae [1-4]. Akin to the endophytes of terrestrial plants in causing disease-free infections in their hosts, these fungi need to be studied with the same zeal as endophytes as they are a promising source of novel bioactive metabolites. The Fungal Endosymbionts of Macroalage (FEM) elaborate molecules e...

Antibacterial and Antioxidant Characteristics of Pigments and Coelomic Fluid of Sea Urchin, Echinodermata Mathaei Species, from the Persian Gulf

Background & Aims: Sea urchin immune responses are directly exposed to potentially pathogenic microorganisms and develop defence responses mainly based on immunocytes and humoral factors contained in the coelomic fluid. In addition, the polyhydroxylated 1, 4-naphthoquinone pigments are found to possess excellent antimicrobial, antialgal and antioxidant activities. The present ...

Antioxidant potential and cytotoxic activity of two red seaweed species, Amansia multifida and Meristiella echinocarpa, from the coast of Northeastern Brazil.

Natural antioxidants found in marine macroalgae are bioactive compounds known to play an important role in the prevention of diseases associated with aging cells protecting them against the oxidative damage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of ethanolic extracts of two species of red seaweeds, Amansia multifida and Meristiella echinocarpa. In vitr...
